Week 7: Troubleshooting and Long Term Care
Composting is an evolving process, and the more we tune into the signals our pile gives us, the better we become at maintaining a thriving system. This week, we’ll dive deep into common composting challenges and the practical solutions needed to keep your compost pile active.
Troubleshooting compost isn’t just about fixing problems—it’s about learning to read the clues your pile provides and responding accordingly. Moisture management is a huge factor, as temperatures can quickly drop when a pile dries out. Seeing actinobacteria spread throughout the pile? That’s your cue—it needs more water! On the other hand, a temperature dip could also signal that a high-nitrogen input wasn’t as potent as expected or that your green materials weren't all that green.
We follow these clues over time, taking notes and using observations to refine our next compost recipe. Long-term composting success isn’t about guessing—it’s about building knowledge from experience and adjusting as we go.
