Why We Created This Workshop
During the COVID lockdown, I got fired up about biological composting after studying with Elaine Ingham. I was certain this was my path—restoring ecosystems, protecting health, doing meaningful work with my hands.
But for almost two years, I was stuck. Making mistakes. Being confused and timid. Blowing money on random equipment and materials. Chasing Ideas. Doing it completely alone. It honestly felt lonely and it started to feel fruitless.
The turning point came when I stopped trying to figure it out by myself. I sought out the best professionals in thes soil consulting field—Todd Harrington, Jo Tobias, and eventually this all clicked when I started working with Keisha and Casey Ernst and Brian Vagg. Suddenly I had three professional soil consultants and composters coaching me through real-world challenges. The systems started to finally make sense. It became faster to try new ideas, move beyond mistakes, and create compost systems I could replicate, and understand the quality of. Being a part of a team, and having professional mentorship changed everything.
Today, I feel confident in the system of composting. I have the security of knowing I’ve created high-quality, toxic-free, biologically diverse soil amendments that can impact any landscape. And we built Compost Academy as a team with Keisha, Casey and Brian so you don’t have to spend 2 years in the wilderness like I did.
Compost Case Studies
Ramirez Canyon: 25 acres restored after wildfire using biological amendments from biologically rich compost. Established mature and growing plant ecosystems while neighbor's properties are stuck in early succession plants.
